"Thank you for the music"

Well as I'm reminiscing about my musical past, I thought I'd share a few things with you all : my love affair with music!

I've been in love with music for as long back as I can remember.
I used to be the kind of kid who had "Annie" playing on the TV constantly.
I knew every song inside out and I was pretty much convinced I was her.
I had the red hair so it was pretty obvious you know?

Singing has always played a huge part in my life.
I think it's the most powerful instrument and I've always been utterly fascinated with singers.
I grew up listening to songbirds like Tori Amos, Cara Dillon, Karan Casey, Sarah McLachlan etc.

Tori Amos has had a huge impact on my life.
I just think she's like the most beautiful creature and for me, she represents pure musical freedom!
I first discovered her through my sisters who both listened to her alot when I was growing up.
Since then, I have just been in love with her music and what she stands for.
Her music is brutally honest, beautiful and immensely powerful.
Though still to this day, I can't bear to listen to her acapella song "Me and a Gun".
If you know it, you'll understand why.

I have always been a bit obsessed with the power singers posses over their audience.
I love that they're telling you a story, giving you an insight into what they hold most precious and are bearing their souls to you.
Such an amazing process.

From singing Sean Nos (old Irish style of singing) as a teenager, I became fascinated with singing unaccompanied.
I think it's the rawest form of expression and it's just so beautiful.
Singers like Cara Dillon and Karan Casey still have the power to utterly entrance me.

So at about the age of 15, I started sneaking into music venues to play gigs.
I had no interest in underage drinking, I just wanted to play my music.
I gigged constantly for about 2 years, recorded a few demos but then found out I had nodules on my vocal chords.
Exactly what every singer never wants to hear.
After that, I just didn't feel like playing anymore for a while.
It wasn't until about 4 years later that I started writing and gigging again while I was living in Canada.

One thing I would say is that even though I don't gig anymore, I still find singing and songwriting such a beautiful and cleansing process.

Don't underestimate the power music can have on your life.
