A lifetime ago I used to be a musician.
At around the age of 15 I started playing solo gigs around Dublin.
All I wanted to do was sing all day every day until the day came when I couldn't sing anymore.
After that day, I didn't see music the same way.
I wasn't enthralled or inspired by it.
I resented it because I couldn't be part of it anymore.
I wasn't enthralled or inspired by it.
I resented it because I couldn't be part of it anymore.
I stopped longing for the new releases, the live shows and the beauty that came with writing your own music.
My guitar didn't see the light of day for many years and it stayed locked in a case in another room.
I didn't want to look at it anymore.
I felt mocked by it.

But as we all know time has a funny way to healing all wounds.
No pain can last forever.
Even though I still don't play or write music, I have a huge respect for those who do.
I like musicians who write songs with brutal honesty and true feeling.
Forget about all the shiny-happy songs and instead show me something real that comes from the heart.
So with that in mind, below are a few of the artists that I'm currently listening to.

William Fitzsimmons
William is an incredibly powerful songwriter and musician because of his musics simplicity.
Listening to his songs, you can truly feel his heartache, his pain and the truth in each and every word.
He doesn't overly complicate things with tons of reverb, dance routines or a huge backing band.
Instead everything is kept just as it should be : bare but truly beautiful.
I was lucky enough to get to see him play in a really small venue in Dublin a few months back.
It was one of the most moving gigs I have ever been to.
What made it even more amazing was that for the last few songs, he just stood in the middle of the crowd with his acoustic guitar and sang without a microphone.
For €13, that is truly value for money.
Below is one of my favourite songs called "Everything has Changed".
Iron and Wine
I first heard Samuel Beam aka Iron and Wine back when I was working in HMV around 8 years ago.
He had just released his album "The Shepherd's Dog" and I feel in love with his music.
There is an effortlessness to his songs that I find so compelling.
His voice is both soft and powerful and such a pleasure to listen to.
I was looking his videos up on Youtube last week and found the official video for "Boy with a Coin".
It's one of the most beautiful pieces of video I've ever seen and you can check it out below.
20 Bulls Each
20 Bulls Each are an Irish hardcore punk band that have been around since 2002.
I first saw them live about two years ago and they were incredible.
I have seen them plenty of times since then and they never disappoint.
They have such energy that you can't help being pulled in and having an auld dance.
My favourite track (a great driving song and also great for the gym) is called "War on You" which is from "A Glorious and Bloody Revolution".
Check it out.
Tori Amos
I don't want to harp on too much about Tori in this post because I dedicated an entire piece to her not so long ago.
She has inspired me endlessly for the last ten years and I have a huge deal of respect for her and what she represents.
One of my favourite tracks is called "A Sorta Fairytale" and I like the song so much, I got it tattooed on my arm a few years back.
The video is so beautiful and story is really powerful.
Alexisonfire
Alexisonfire were one of my favourite hardcore punk bands.
I've been listening to them for years and was really sad to find out that they decided to split up recently.
Such a shame but they leave behind a legacy of great music.
The band had such a great dynamic with the contrasting vocals from Dallas Green and Wade Mac Neill.
I saw them live about 5 years ago and they blew my mind.
One of my favourite tracks has always been "No Transitory" and if you haven't heard it before, I recommend you do so this instant.
Part II will be coming your way shortly.
