Kevyn Aucoin : A True Makeup Artist.

I'll be honest with you : I find some aspects of the beauty industry and our "modern" society completely baffling.
I think something somewhere at sometime got mixed up and now we're all slightly losing it.
My approach to makeup could be deemed simple but here it is:

  • Makeup should be individual and reflect the person wearing it.

  • We are not all supposed to look like clones of each other.
Every face on this earth has different bone structure, face and eye shapes, eye colour etc. so we can't all wear the exact same look.

  • Makeup should be used where it's needed and not where it isn't.
If you have nothing to hide, don't conceal it.

  • What works for one person won't necessarily work for everyone.

  • When doing your makeup, the goal should be to look like yourself but on a really good day.
Not to look like someone completely different.

Sometimes when I see how crazy everything has gotten, I feel like I'm alone in my beliefs of what real beauty is.
I don't think you need to see 13 eyeshadows to create something beautiful or that contouring is the best thing since the invention of the clock.

Just when I'm feeling alone in my quest to promote natural beauty, I stumble across one of my Kevyn Aucoin books, "The Art of Makeup", that was so kindly given to me by a lovely individual (thanks Nara).
This book defines everything in terms of what makeup is all about.
It shows you that it doesn't matter what you wear, what truly matters is how you wear it.
That, as Kevyn put, "to emphasise imperfections" (he meant what makes us different from each other, not blemishes or discolouration) is what makes us unique and beautiful.
I can't fully describe how his work makes me feel and I was so delighted to see that we agree on so many basic principles of makeup.

I have always felt that warm tones work best in terms of eyeshadow, blusher etc. and that a yellow-toned foundation in general fits nicer compared to a pink tone.
He felt the same way.

Forget what you see on Social Media that you should always do a full-on, heavy contour, smokey eye (those two words have kind of lost all meaning now haven't they), fake lashes etc. and instead see that you can look however you want to look.
That a natural makeup look or a lime green eye makeup are both amazing once they make you happy and portrays who you are.

I always come back to Kevyn Aucoins books and I truly feel that they feed my soul.
It brings back my confidence in what I believe is right and he makes me want to fight all the more.
The interview below nearly brought me to tears.
Kevyn stood for something so amazing back then as one of the first well known male gay makeup artists.
He was unique and was adored by the likes of Tina Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna, Tori Amos, the list goes on and on.
He also believed in women's true beauty and worked to portray that in the simplest way possible.
Kevyn passed away back on May 7th 2002 but he still lives on through his makeup line that was launched just before his death in 2001.
As relevant now as he was back then, he is still a legend throughout the fashion and beauty world and is sorely missed.
