Makeup books: The good, the bad, and the waste of money.

Hey guys,

Today I wanted to chat about some of my favourite makeup books aswell as including some of the ones I wish I hadn't bought.
So here we go.

 THE GOOD

Julie Conway: Makeup Artistry for Professional Make-up Qualifications.

Remember that great saying "never judge a book by its cover?".
That definitely applies to this book because its cover is awful but it's one of the greatest makeup books I've ever come across.
Some parts of it are quite old fashioned but it thoroughly goes through areas like skin types, face and eye shapes as well as covering things like theatrical makeup, makeup throughout history and so much more.
This is one of those awesome books you can always go back for reference if you are unsure about a certain area and it will always be useful.
I got my one on Amazon.com and it was under €30 but it is the best one I have ever bought and I would strongly recommend it.

Alex Box by Rankin.

This book is one of those things that no matter how many times you look at it, it will continue to inspire and amaze you.
It's a huge hardback book that showcases some of the beautiful works by Alex Box.
This book will show you makeup on a completely different level from anything you have ever seen before and each of the looks are totally unique and executed to perfection.
For all lovers of High Fashion/Avant Garde makeup and general art lovers, treat yourself to this beauty.
If you are looking for a makeup book to read, this won't be the one for you because apart from an interview with Alex Box, the pages are just full of amazing images.
I got this one again off Amazon a good while ago and it was around €40 which I know is quite a lot but it is huge, timeless andhugely inspirational.

Rae Morris: Makeup the Ultimate Guide.

I'd recommend everyone having a copy of this book because it's so full of information aswell as having the most amazing images.
I'm a big fan of Rae Morris's work and she shares my obsession with white eye pencil and practically every look in this book includes it.
A makeup artist after my own heart.
The book shows you how to create a variety of looks that cater for all ages, ethnicities and tastes.
Rae uses tons of bright coloured loose pigments which I love and her descriptions of the products she uses and her techniques are all pretty straight forward.
I got this book on line for less than €25, it was worth every penny and I adore it!

Rae Morris: Express Makeup.

Another great book by Rae Morris and all of the above points relate to this book as well.
Lots more interesting looks and generally just a gorgeous book to have.
It was around €25 and I love it.
Rae has another book called "Beautiful Eyes" and to be honest I've only heard bad things about it so I never bought it.
Apparently it's nearly identical to the two books above so I would give "Beautiful Eyes" a miss if I was you.

Kevyn Aucoin: Face Forward.

This has become a classic makeup book over the last few years and it's another one of my favourites.
It goes through some of the products that Kevyn used to love and use.
Each page of this book is covered with a different celebrity like Tina Turner, Madonna, Cher and Tori Amos to name but a few.
Kevyn was one of the most in demand makeup artists to the stars and in this book, he transformed different actress/singers into screen icons/historical figures.
For example, he transformered Martha Stewart into Veronica Lake and Tina Turner into Cleopatra.
Every look in this book is stunning and it's one of those books you will want to keep close to you for your entire life.
Again, I think I paid about €25 for this one and I think everyone makeup artist/enthusiast should own one.

OK, now for the not so good ones.

  THE BAD

Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to makeup, Skin and Hair from the Beauty Authority.

Well this book was an impulse purchase and let me explain.
I used to live in Canada and I was Sephora's biggest fan.
I used to spend all of my cash in that beautiful store and even when I went to the States, I had to check out the Sephoras there just in case I was missing out on something.
When I came home after my time in Canada, I missed Vancouver so much that when I saw this Sephora book in Waterstones, I got so excited and had to buy it.
This book is kind of like a catalogue for Sephora and when you don't live anywhere near one, that's a bit frustrating.
I really did not enjoy this book and regret spending around €30/€35 on it.

 THE WASTE OF MONEY

Janus Vinther: Special Effects Make-up.

I used to be really into special effects makeup.
I still enjoy it but I prefer the beauty and fashion side of things.
This was the first special effects makeup book I had come across in a shop and I got a bit overly excited and forked out around €40 for it!!!
INSANE!
It's a pretty small book and to be honest the images are absolutely awful in it.
 Not very inspiring at all!
I didn't find the step-by-step instructions that helpful either and apart from taking a few things away from this book, I never looked at it again.

What are your favourite makeup books?
