The coffee drinkers guide to Dublin.

Well to start I just want to let you know that I take my coffee very seriously.
More seriously than most to be honest.
I also take it black if you are ever feeling generous and want to get on my good side.

Over the last year or so I have become even more fussy about the black stuff.
I used to be consumed by my obsession with cappuccinos.
Skinny-not-too-hot to be precise.
Usually from Butlers and mainly for the free chocolate not the coffee.

But now I have seen the light.
Well the dark to be precise.
I decided to keep things simple and I've just found that having a black or filter coffee is truly what it is all about.
Having a latte or cappuccino is basically just a frothy cup of hot milk with a tiny amount of coffee.
So tiny in fact that you could easily think that there wasn't any in there at all.
More milk than sense.
Too much of this liquid lactose really isn't great for your stomach so having a few of these milky mommas a day isn't going to have you feeling too amazing.

So I have compiled a list of some of my favourite coffee joints in Dublin that really have truly mastered the art of the pure black stuff.

1 : Clement & Pekoe.

These guys come tops for quite a few reasons.

  • They make the most amazing filter coffees and offer two different blends each day which range between €2.20-€2.50. Total bargain.
  • They are located in the heart of South William St and offer takeaway or sit in service.
  • The staff and owners are all awesome and I pretty much know them on a first name basis these days.
  • They offer a wide range of loose teas for those who ain't on the black stuff. I strongly recommend their Green tea blend which is nicer than any other one I've tried.
  • To top it all off, they also do a wide range of cakes, cookies and biscuits ( try the macaroons god dammit) so if you are like me and fancy a coffee/cake combo, all their sweets are beautiful.

Overall, Clement & Pekoe just has a really nice, relaxed vibe and in my opinion, they offer the best coffee in Dublin.

2 : Bewleys on Grafton Street.

      • Bewleys is one of the most beautiful buildings on Grafton Street and it still baffles me that they nearly had to close it down.
      • I'm in Bewleys at least once every day because they do the most amazing americanos.I always order my americanos with some ice. Why? Well because we mainly use milk to cool down our hot beverage now don't we? Not necessarily because we like the taste of a milky coffee though. I use ice because it cools it down without changing the taste. I strongly recommend you try it.
      • They also have the most amazing breakfast menu and sweet selection. Pretty much every cake and pastry imaginable is available in Bewleys fresh every day.
      • Bewleys have some of the nicest staff I have ever come across and they all work really hard but are always so friendly. Again, I know alot of the staff from going in their so often and they are just awesome people.(Joanna and Tomasz deserve a special mention because they are always so lovely, helpful and just generally amazing people).

        3 : Le Petit Parisien.

        • It took me a long time to give this place a try but it has become a regular hang-out location for me and my good friend and Designer, Lisa Lu.
        • They do the most amazing cakes/tartlets and it's incredibly difficult to walk by their sugar-filled window without wanting to run in and buy everything.
        • It is a very small cafe and can feel borderline claustrophobic if there are more than about 15 people in it. It would be great if they could expand the seating area a bit but this might ruin their ambiance.
        • I was really shocked to discover how beautiful their americanos were. Kind of surprised for some reason. I have on more than one occasion had about three in a row and enjoyed each one down to the last drop.
        • The only negative thing I would say about this cafe is that sometimes you can be served by a not-so-nice member of staff. Some of them are lovely but I had one experience which an incredibly rude waitress who made you feel like you were in her house and just annoying her by ordering things.
Apart from that though, the staff seem to be really lovely.

I would definitely recommend giving this hidden gem a try.
And hey, if you don't go for the caffeine at least go for a cake!

So that's my beautiful brew round up for Dublins fair city.
And don't forget, coffee should be taken very very seriously:-)
