Eau Dear Lord : "Celebrity" Fragrances.

Over the festive season, I was shocked to see how many new "celebrity" fragrances were on the market.
It seems anyone who has ever been on Big Brother ,appeared on The X-Factor or had a sex tape that went viral has their own fragrance.
To be honest, the concept of a "celebrity" fragrance is something I don't quite understand.

Well, I understand it from the "celebrities" point of view.
Relatively easy money and all they really have to do is put their name to a scent, promote it and then wait for the money to start coming in.
It's a billion dollar industry so there's the appeal in black and white.
But for the some of the fragrances I saw on sale, I really struggled to imagine the type of person who would actually buy them.

Hey, I was young once (as my Mum always says) and was easily drawn into buying whatever my favourite celebrities were selling.
When I was 10years old, it was all about the Spice Girls.
They were up there with the Rolling Stones in terms of how much merchandise they had on sale.
You could get pyjamas, mugs , polaroid cameras, stickers etc all in the name of Spice Girls.
They also had their own fragrance : Impulse Special Edition Official Spice Girls body spray.
I couldn't tell you what it smelled like but it was by the Spice Girls and at the time, that was all that mattered.

I was shocked to learn that this body spray was released in 1997, madness!
Celebrity fragrances weren't a big thing back then and this is the only one I remember.
It was also the only one I ever owned.

In terms of price, there's a huge difference between body sprays and perfumes.
I'd say this spray sold for around €2-€4 while some "celebrity" perfumes nowadays sell for €60+.
Big money for a young person and even bigger money for the parent that is expected to buy it for them.

So what's the appeal?

Is the scent really that amazing?
Would you still buy the same fragrance if it wasn't by your favourite singer/band/actor/reality star?

For example, one of the most popular perfumes of last year was Lady Gagas "Fame".
Do her fans just buy it because it's her fragrance or do they genuinely like the smell?
Also, would they buy the it even if they hated the scent?

Trivia Time:

Can you name the top two selling "celebrity" fragrances to date?

Answer 1:
Elizabeth Taylor "White Diamonds".
It was released by Elizabeth Arden in 1991 and it grossed a whopping $61.2million in 2010.
She also has 9 other fragrances on the market.

Answer 2:
Jennifer Lopez : Too many to name.

In the space of 10years, J-Lo banked £10million from the sales of her perfume range.
Also can you believe that she has put her name to 18 fragrances!!!!
Well hey, for £10million I think we would probably all do it.

And now for the fun part!

I searched the internet for some of the most random "celebrity" fragrances and here is what I came up with.

Antonio Banderos:

When I first saw this ad, I thought it fake for a minute but no it exists.
Shockingly Antonio has lended his name to 15 different fragrances.
J-Lo better watch her pretty back.

Bruce Willis:

I love Bruce Willis and I think he's awesome!!
He's also one of my favourite actor.
This shot for his fragrance does nothing for me personally.
I love that they tried to make him look super casual and approachable.
I can just imagine the Stylist being like "a V-Neck sweater with a pure white t-shirt underneath will soften you up you big strong man".
Personally, I would have been alot more impressed if the ad represented the true Bruce Willis that we know and love. (please see below).

The company behind Bruces fragrance claim that it is "the manliest scent in the world."
I have no words.

Amy Childs:

I'll be completely honest and say I know very little about Amy Childs apart from the fact that she was on a reality TV show and I think she now owns a beauty salon somewhere.
So who would buy this fragrance?
That's a good question..........
