Adolescence: A big ole pain in the.....

Hey guys,

Now that I am midway through my twenties, I still reminisce about my teens and.....shudder slightly.
I think teens nowadays have more stress and pressure on them then ever before.
At least when I was 16, there was no Facebook so the majority of your public humiliations remained between friends.

I come from a generation where Myspace was the coolest thing ever....my how things have changed.
There are so many things that we all wish we understood when we were in our teens.
As a teenager, you are convinced the world is out to get you and things will never get better.

So below are a few things I would say to myself as a teen if I could.

Don't stress.

Whether it is about exams, your life, family, boyfriends/girlfriends, they're not worth stressing about.
It's not the end of your life if things don't work out the way you had hoped.
Everything happens for a reason whether you understand that at the time or not.

Don't stress if you have no idea what you would like to do with your life.
I only figured out I wanted to do about 4 years ago after years of working different jobs and travelling around the world.
I learnt so much during that time and it was exactly what I needed.

Always remember that you don't just have to work/train as one thing!
You can be whatever you want to be and life is too short to waste your time doing something you hate.

Surround yourself with the right type of  people.

We have all spent years hanging around with people that did nothing but bring us down and partially drive you nuts in the process.
The strongest thing you can do is stand up for what you believe is right and surround yourself with positive people.
Leave the negative ones behind to wallow in their self pity and attention seeking ways.
You're so much better than that.

Look after yourself.

I truly mean this both physically and mentally.
In Ireland, mental health is still something that people aren't very comfortable talking about which can make you feel really isolated.
Everyone at some point has experienced some mental health issues and the strongest thing you can do is ask for help if you need it.
Mind yourself.

Don't be afraid to be yourself.

Some of the most amazing people I have ever met all had a hard time in school/teenage life so if that sounds like you, don't worry.
The best is yet to come.
Having the strength to stand up for who you are and for what you believe in is one of the most powerful things you can do with your life.
It will take time to get confident in who you are but when you do, you will never look back.

Don't be afraid to try new things.

Don't limit yourself to always doing the same things or being around the same people.
Boring.
Try new things, talk to someone you wouldn't usually, take a risk.
I used to be afraid of trying new things in case I embarrassed myself but now, I couldn't care less.
If you embarrass yourself laugh it off and move on.

Look after those who mean the most to you.

Life means nothing without the people you love and care about so make sure everyone is looked after and happy.
We all went through some bad times as teenagers when we were convinced our parents/family were trying to ruin our lives but they just wanted to look after you.
I, for one get along great with my family now but it hasn't always been that way.
Far from it actually.

So overall, be yourself don't worry what everyone else is doing.
Just focus on being happy.
