"The Expressionist" : New work and portfolio advice.

For the past two odd years, I've been shooting alot with Irish photographer Brian McNamara.
Before I met Brian, my portfolio was a bit sad looking and was filled with shots that I wasn't happy with.
I had pictures in my book that I was happy with in terms of the makeup but I didn't like the shot overall.
Sometimes I wouldn't have been too keen on how the shoot was styled, the hair etc.
There's no point showing off your work to a potential client and being like "just look at the makeup in that one, I hate everything else about it!".
So I scrapped all of my old work and started over with Brian.
I had alot of ideas for shoots that I wanted to try and working with Brian made it really easy.
I usually come up with a kind of mental idea and he trusts me to run with it.
He puts his stamp on it and the shots always come out better than I'd imagined.
What can be better than that!

Building up your portfolio is no easy task and it can take a few years to get a solid amount of work together.
To say it can be torture would be a complete understatement.
I'm incredibly critical of my own work and I go through phases of absolutely loving a look I created and then I start hating it.
Unless I'm 100% happy with the shot, I won't use it.
When you're showing a potential client your portfolio, you need to be 100% confident in what you're showing off.
You can't have any doubt in your mind that it's full of your best work.
I'm always changing my book and adding new pictures aswell as taking out old ones that don't take my breath away anymore.
My motto has become "when in doubt, leave it out!".

Below is one of our most recent shoots and I absolutely love it!

Photographer : Brian McNamara.
Model : Kelly from Morgan.
Makeup : Ciara Allen.
